Arts and Crafts Group

Many children struggle in social relationships on a daily basis.  This may be a result of the lack of knowledge or skills within the area of social development and social competency.  Social development refers to a child's abilities and characteristics that allow him or her to engage in meaningful social interactions with adults, peers and siblings to develop his or her own self-concept and social role.

Peer interactions and social skills focus primarily on the quality and frequency of a child's interactions with children of a similar age, including the ability to initiate, form and maintain friendships and personal associations, respond to and initiate social contacts with peers, interact effectively in a small group, and cooperate.

Self-concept and social role includes the development of self-awareness, personal knowledge, self-worth and pride, moral development, sensitivity to others' needs and feelings and coping skills. Examples include: sharing items and attention with others, playing cooperatively, recognizing basic similarities and differences in others, the ability to appropriately express emotions and coping effectively with disappointment, anger and criticism.

Providing children with opportunities to practice social success allows for the continued growth of self-esteem and confidence. As children continue to develop, long-term effects of social skills facilitation can include:

  • Decreased rates of depression and anxiety

  • Greater academic sucess

  • Ability to obtain a supportive social network

  • Greater ability to communicate needs effectively with others

  • The ability to work well in a team and to motivate others to do their best to achieve a common goal
